Retail sales data for the month of January showed a 0.4% increase, matching economists' expectations, and data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed earlier today confirmed the same. The gain of 0.4% in January reverses the 0.1% decline that was posted in December last year.

The Reserve bank of Australia published the meeting minutes from the early February monetary policy meeting. The minutes showed the central bank maintaining an upbeat picture on the Australian economy. Despite the optimism from the RBA, the Australian dollar failed to hold on to the gains from yesterday as prices were seen trading bearish since the open.

The Australian dollar was seen posting steady gains on Tuesday after data suggested that business conditions improved strongly in the nine-years to January. Data from the National Australia Bank's (NAB) business conditions index showed an increase from +9.9 registered previously to +16.2 in January marking a 9-year high in the index.

The Australian dollar is seen to be trading weaker this morning after retail sales for December contracted by 0.1%, which was in contrast to the expectations of a 0.3% increase. The U.S. dollar is also showing some signs of strength after the greenback turned weaker on Friday following the January payrolls report.

The fourth quarter of 2016 inflation data will be released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics today. Economists are expecting to see the headline inflation rise 0.7% on a quarterly basis, rising at the same pace of 0.7% in the previous quarter.

The U.S. President elect, Donald Trump will be hosting his first official press conference today at 1500 GMT. Today will be the first time the controversy courting president-elect will be speaking and the markets will no doubt be paying close attention.

The Australian dollar was seen trading slightly weaker against the greenback even as the euro and the yen strengthened in early trading today. The focus was the Australian government mid-year budget update which comes amid broad concerns that the deterioration in the budget deficit could trigger ratings downgrade from the coveted AAA sovereign credit rating.

Data from Australia released earlier today showed a surprise disappointment as the third quarter GDP posted a 0.5% contraction.
